The four people killed on aChicagoland commuter trainearly on the morning of Labor Day appeared to be sleeping when they were fatally shot.
CNN,NBC NewsandABC 7reported that officials, including Forest Park Deputy Police Chief Chris Chin and Mayor Rory Hoskins, said the victims were sleeping when they were shot.
“These victims, likely, never saw it coming,” Hoskins told ABC. “They were executed on Labor Day. In our community, people go to the pool. They go to the park. You know, they barbecue. But, today, a lot of people were calling the mayor’s office, expressing concern and asking if they were safe.”
NBC reported that the victims were not seated together.
PEOPLE reached out to the Forest Park Police Department for further information, but they did not immediately respond.
The shooting occurred in two train cars on the CTA’s Blue Line, authorities said. When police arrived on scene, the suspect had escaped the area, but was later arrested on a Pink Line train in Chicago, police said.

Police said the shooting is believed to have been an isolated incident.
