7 Dead, Including 2 Young Siblings, and 36 Injured After Bus Crashes in Mississippi

Seven people have died, including two children, and 36 others were injured after a bus overturned on a road in Mississippi.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said the incident happened after the bus experienced “tire failure,” according to theAssociated Press,CNNandNBC News. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

Six passengers died at the scene, and another was pronounced dead in the hospital, the news release said. All of the victims, which included a 6-year-old brother and 16-year-old sister, were from Guatemala, NBC News reported, citing the Warren County Coroner’s Office.

The NTSB and the Warren County Coroner’s Office did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for information.

Mississippi Highway Patrol spokesperson Kervin Stewart added to the outlet that “several Mexican identification documents” were discovered on the bus.

According to the Mississippi Highway Patrol, which shared information from the bus company, the bus was en route from Atlanta to Dallas with a total of 41 passengers and two drivers.

An investigation is ongoing, an NTSB spokesperson said in amedia briefingon Aug. 31.
