The longline continues, “Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.”
In Martin’s novella, the story begins when Dunk, a squire, takes the possessions of a deceased knight and heads to Ashford to compete in a tournament as “Ser Duncan the Tall.”
While Martin is heavily involved in the project as a writer and executive producer, it’s not clear how much of the show will lend itself to the original narrative or expand beyond the pages.
“A novella is considerably shorter than a novel (particularly one of my novels), so there’s less source material,” Martin wrote onhis blogin June 2024.
The Hedge Knightis 164 pages, which, compared to Martin’s other novels that range between 700 to 1,000 pages, is a relatively short read.
The stories take place about 90 years before the main events of the series and follow Dunk, the future Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, Ser Duncan the Tall and Egg, the future King Aegon V Targaryen.
The novellas explore the history of Westeros, providing a rich backstory to theGame of Thronesuniverse, detailing the lives and lineage of significant characters before the events of the main series.
