Get excited because this month’s new moon doubles as anannular solar eclipse, beginning at 8:43 a.m. PT and ending at 2:47 p.m. PT on Oct. 2. It peaks at 11:45 a.m. PT.

While all lunar phases haveastrological significance, PEOPLE’s resident astrologer Kyle Thomas points out that solar eclipses are “three times more powerful than a normal new moon” and will “blast open a door to us as we embrace new opportunities, projects, plans and horizons.”

The best part about the cosmic effects of the eclipse? They have the potential to impact our lives both on the day the eclipse peaks and in the weeks surrounding the extraterrestrial event, so Thomas suggests you “keep your antennae up” to maximize the universe’s offerings.

This solar eclipse takes place in Libra, the seventh zodiac sign on the wheel that aligns with partnerships and commitments. “These periods spotlight relationships and often trigger significant unions or separations,” he explains.

Among the many astrological aspects affecting October’s new moon include its conjunction with Mercury, which Thomas says “will allow us to find a powerful balance between our mind and emotions” — but at the same time it’s square with Mars, can also “enflame emotions and tempers.”

Venus, the planetary ruler of this lunation, “is perfectly trine” with Mars and Saturn, meaning it’s at an angle of harmony. “This means that our personal and professional goals can be reached if we seek to build for the longterm,” says Thomas.
