Anna Kendrick Recalls Microdosing on Mushrooms with Brittany Snow at Halloween Party: 'Don't Do Drugs'

Anna Kendrickis looking back on a Halloween trip gone wrong.

Appearing onThe Late Show with Stephen Colberton Wednesday, Oct. 23, thePitch Perfectstar reflected on a 2023 Halloween party withBrittany Snowwhere the pair decided to try microdosing on mushrooms.

But Kendrick, 39, got more than she bargained for. “We went to this party and someone asked if I wanted to try microdosing mushrooms. And that’s like a thing people do. And I was like, ‘Yeah, you know, I’m fun.’ And that’s how you know you’re fun, when you have to say it to a crowd,” Kendrick joked.

The actress then detailed what she took, describing it as a “little chocolate bar” where “everybody takes a square,” and noted that she ultimately chopped her already-small dose in half.

“And that’s the night that I learned that chocolate is not a great delivery system for mushrooms because sometimes it doesn’t mix properly and sometimes there can be one little bite that doesn’t have a micro-dose, it has a real macrodose,” she said. “So I’m at this party and its the first time I ever tried microdosing and I’m just getting so high. And I start saying, ‘Oh no, I’m so high. Oh God I’m so high.’ And I just can’t stop saying it.”

Luckily, Snow, 38, had her costar’s back. As Kendrick explained, her “hero” friend realized that she was “tripping balls” and decided to take “a bunch more mushrooms.”

“So then just the two of us are in the corner of this party, staring at each other, grinning like the Joker while streaming tears. But we felt great,” Kendrick said.

“And I’m just going, ‘You’re so beautiful,’ ‘No you’re so beautiful,’ ‘You’re so talented,’ No you’re so talented.' And she had these little jewels on her face for the party and it was blending into the L.A. skyline,” she added. “I was like, ‘You’re a creative genius’ and I told her she should remake the filmChinatown. So those were my big revelations from mushrooms.”

Kendrick, who appeared onColbertto promote her directorial debutWoman of the Hour— now streaming on Netflix — later joked that her story was for “entertainment purposes only,” after hostStephen Colbertasked her if microdosing is legal.

“Learn from my mistakes, kids,” she added. “Don’t do drugs.”

Earlier this month, Kendrick spoke with PEOPLE about her lasting friendships with her fellowPitch Perfectstars, saying that it’s “really amazing the way that they’ve stayed a part of my life.”

“Frankly, I think that I can have a hard shell, and the fact that I was around these women making movies for 10 years, I feel really grateful that they were just around enough to wear me down, I guess,” said Kendrick of the 2012 hit and its two sequels — which also starredRebel Wilson,Anna Camp, Ester Dean, Alexis Knapp, Hana Mae Lee, Shelley Regner and Kelley Jakle.

“They’re some of the most rewarding relationships in my life, so I’m amazed that they’ve stuck around in my life, frankly. I got really lucky,” she added.

Kendrick is not the first celebrity to share their microdosing experience or joke about the matter. During a 2024NHL All-StarGame press conference in February,Michael Bubléjoked with reporters that he microdosed on mushrooms heading to the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto for the event’s mock draft.

“My buddy told me this is just a microdose of mushrooms and he was lying,” Bublé said at the time. “So, I’ll be honest, I thought I was inBlades of Gloryfor most of the time that I was out there until it sort of settled down and then I realized, ‘Holy s—, I am at the NHL All-Star Game.’ "
