Barden Bellas forever!

In a new interview with PEOPLE,Anna Kendrickreflects on her enduring friendships with her costars from thePitch Perfectfranchise.

“It’s really amazing the way that they’ve stayed a part of my life. Frankly, I think that I can have a hard shell, and the fact that I was around these women making movies for 10 years, I feel really grateful that they were just around enough to wear me down, I guess,” says Kendrick, who starred in the 2012 hit about fictional Barden University’s all-female a cappella club, as well as two sequels.

Rebel Wilson,Brittany Snow,Anna Camp, Ester Dean, Alexis Knapp, Hana Mae Lee, Shelley Regner and Kelley Jakle also starred in the movies.

“They’re some of the most rewarding relationships in my life, so I’m amazed that they’ve stuck around in my life, frankly. I got really lucky,” continues Kendrick.

In an Oct. 7 interview with Hoda Kotb onToday, Kendrick said she and the “Pitch Perfect girls” are “family in the truest sense of the word.”

Kendrick, whose directorial debutWoman of the Hourpremieres Oct. 18 on Netflix, told Kotb she called Snow for a chat the day before filming began.

“My confidence was so low. And I called Brittany, and I was expecting a really sugary-sweet pep talk ‘cause that’s kinda who she is. And she’s just went, ‘Anna, you’re gonna get on set and you’re gonna know what to do.’ I was like, ‘Why are you talking to me like me? That is so rude.’ But it was also exactly what I needed to hear.”

Speaking of thePitch Perfectcast, she added, “I don’t know what I did to get so lucky to have those girls as a part of my life.”

“I get why maybe people who mostly associate me with a fun musical romp would not think that this would be what I would direct,” Kendrick tells PEOPLE.

“But there’s something about that concept ofThe Dating Gamewhere there’s a partition and you can’t see who’s on the other side,” she continues. “And the fact that there once was someone on the other side who was a serial murderer. It’s this perfect disturbing metaphor for the way that we have to trust people while knowing there might be things that are hidden from view.”
