Beloved Teacher and Her 1-Year-Old Daughter Die After Getting Trapped in N.Y. House Fire: 'Unimaginable Loss'

Crews responded to the scene on Clinton Hollow Road in Clinton, N.Y., around 10:40 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 13,according to a news releasefrom New York State Police.

The person who reported the fire was outside the burning home when crews arrived and said “two children and their mother were inside the house on the second floor.”

However, police said crews were unable to enter the residence until the Pleasant Valley Fire Department arrived at the scene.

Shannon Hubbard, 35, of Brewster, and her two children, a 3-year-old boy and a 1-year-old girl, were eventually pulled from the burning building, according to NYSP.

Shannon and the 1-year-old were transported to Vassar Hospital and Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital, respectively, where they were later pronounced dead.

Police said the 3-year-old boy and a 39-year-old man were transported to Westchester Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

Shannon was a preschool teacher at Chatham Elementary School, according to amessagefrom Scott Carpenter, Superintendent of the Monomoy Regional School District.

Carpenter said Shannon’s death “will undoubtedly be shocking and painful for our school community.” Counseling has been made available at the school district’s elementary schools in the wake of the tragedy.

“Shannon was a beloved member of our school community, a dedicated and engaged educator, and a truly kind person,” Carpenter said in a separatestatement, shared on Instagram. “Our deepest condolences go out to her family, loved ones, colleagues, students and everyone who was lucky enough to know her.”

Dennis police chief John Brady said in a statement that the department is pledging its full support to the Hubbard family following the “unimaginable loss.”

“The men and women of the Dennis Police Department are mourning this heartbreaking news,” Brady said. “Patrolman Hubbard is a valued member of our department and community, and more importantly our friend. We extend our deepest sympathies to him and his family.”

An investigation into the fire is ongoing, according to NYSP.
