“She’s doing good,” said Springsteen of Scialfa, 71, who revealed she was diagnosed with the blood cancer six years ago in her husband’s recentRoad Diarydocumentary. “We caught it early, which was important.”
“It’s a tough disease. It’s very fatiguing,” added the “Born to Run” musician, before explaining why the pair waited to publicly reveal Scialfa’s diagnosis: “She hadn’t played in the band in a long time, and people I don’t think knew why. ‘Where’s Patti?’”

The illness has led Scialfa to live with caution, but it hasn’t lessened her love for performing. “This affects my immune system so I just have to be careful what I choose to do and where I choose to go,” she said in the film.
“Every once in a while, I come to a show or two and I can sing a few songs onstage, and that’s been a treat,” added Scialfa. “That’s the new normal for me right now, and I’m OK with that.”
