From the moment they married back in 2021, country artistPayton Smithand wife Hannah always dreamed of raising a family together — and now that dream is coming true.
“It’s very surreal to know that we’re going to be parents,” exclaims Payton, 24, in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE from the couple’s home in Nashville. “We’re over the moon about it. It’s very surreal. It hasn’t quite kicked in for the both of us yet, but we’re super excited.”
The couple, who have known each other since they were just teens, received the amazing news back in June.
“I found out actually the day before Father’s Day,” wife Hannah, 24, tells PEOPLE. “Payton was out of town playing a show, and I just had a gut feeling. So, I told him I was going to wait for him to take the test.”
But she simply couldn’t wait. Hannah ended up taking a pregnancy test that very same day, and when she received the positive result, she decided she would go and make Father’s Day extra special.

“I got off the road and came home and I had this gut feeling, like I knew I was going to feel every part of it of finding out I was going to be a dad,” adds Payton, who burst onto the country music scene in 2019 with his debut single, “Like I Knew You Would.”

“But I even remember pulling in the drive thinking, ‘this could be the last time that Idon’t knowI’m going to be a dad.’ So, I remember walking through the door, and I was like, all right, let’s find out together," he says, adding with a laugh, “She kind of fooled me.”
And then, the tears began to flow.

Admittedly, the couple says that the pregnancy was “definitely unplanned,” but something that they have always wanted.
“I think that family is one of the most important things for both of us, and we have really great parents and family members that have modeled that very well,” says Hannah. “So that’s always been something we were excited about but didn’t think it would happen this soon. But we’re excited.”

There’s just one problem as “technically, the extra room is my office and Payton’s music room,” laughs Hannah. “So, we’re both getting kicked out of our space, happily though.”
Happy is certainly the emotion for both of them both personally and professionally, especially as Payton is enjoying quite the upswing when it comes to his music career.
“My life is full of gratitude right now with so many things,” says Payton, who will head out on tour with “Villain” hitmaker Lily Rose come September.
Even Payton’s brand-new single “Hold That Thought,” has taken on a whole new meaning for him since hearing he is going to be a dad.
“When I wrote that song, it was very much all about wanting to capture a nostalgic moment for me,” he remarks. “And now when I sing it, it’s so much about soaking in the moment and looking back on big moments that make you who you are. There are so many moments that are going to happen within the next eight months that I just want to slow down, take it all in, and be able to hold onto it.”
