A Dallas police officer has been left blind following an attack while she was on duty.

Senior Corporal Karissa David was shot in the face, while her colleague, Officer Darron Burks, was also shot and killed in a premeditated attack on Aug. 29 in Dallas, the Dallas Police Department stated in anews release.

According to aGoFundMe pageset up for David, “she is currently blind in both eyes," her family shared.

The suspect, identified as Corey Cobb-Bey, 30, carried out the attack shortly after 10:00 p.m. local time, first fatally shooting Burks with a handgun from his car after the officer approached him in a parking lot. He also “recorded the encounter” on his phone, according to police.

At 10:12 p.m., David arrived on the scene and positioned her squad car at the entrance of the parking lot. As she got out of the vehicle, Cobb-Bey “shot at her multiple times.” She then fired back at the suspect and he shot her in the face, per the release.

Cobb-Bey then fled the scene. “Patrol pursued the suspect into Lewisville, and Cobb-Bey came to a stop on the expressway just north of Highway 121 and exited his vehicle with the shotgun in his left hand,” police said. “The suspect approached the officers and pointed the shotgun at them.”

David was transported to the hospital in a critical but stable condition, where her family said she remained for several weeks up until her release on Sept. 19.

According to the GoFundMe, David has “a long journey to come” as she requires outpatient care “for at least several months to come.”

“She has an upcoming surgery back in the hospital soon and various other specialist appointments scheduled,” her family wrote. “Money that comes in will be used for modifications to their home, technology and devices that will aid her in living without her vision, and transportation to the therapies and care she needs.”

“At this time, the investigation has determined the shooting is premeditated, with Detectives finding and collecting evidence on social media,” police said, per the release.
