Iowa previously voted in favor of Trump in both the 2016 and 2020 elections. Before that, the state swung Democratic every election year since 1988, except in 2004, when former PresidentGeorge W. Bushwas reelected.

The Iowa results come days after a poll from Ann Selzer atThe DeMoines Register/Mediacomprojected that Iowa could flip for Harris, when it was previously considered an easy win for Trump. Harris led that poll with 47%-44%.

“It’s hard for anybody to say they saw this coming,” Selzer said about the shocking results, which opened up a wider debate about whether Harris would see similar gains in other Midwest states. “She has clearly leaped into a leading position.”
