Earlier this month the journalist, author andfounder of BirthFUND, 37, welcomed her andhusband Jonathan Singletary’s second son, she tells PEOPLE exclusively. The new family of four are doing well.

“We are all healthy and happy to be together and learning each other,” she says. However, she admits she’s still adjusting to that newborn no-sleep schedule. “I’m not sure my brain is operating at full capacity,” she says with a laugh. “I’m sleep-deprived, but I’m good, I’m good.”

Welteroth, who has long chosen to keep her2-year-old son’sname private, says she feels differently about sharing her newest little one’s moniker: SantiGold Singletary. “I wasn’t originally going to but I’m just so obsessed with his name,” she says, gushing. “His name means peace in Thai and it means Saint in Spanish.”

That said, she didn’t rush things, even making time to do some Reiki energy work with her midwife in the park before heading home.

Welteroth says it’s a testament to the value of midwifery. “I feel like the way birth is depicted, it’s always this frantic call to the doctor. I never had to do that.”

It’s a feeling of calm and safety in childbirth that Welteroth is hoping to make available to every pregnant woman she can, through BirthFUND. The grassroots initiative seeks to pay for midwife services for expectant mothers in hopes of combatting rising maternal mortality rates in America.

Just before launching this past April, during Black Maternal Health Week, “I found out at the end of February that I was going to be part of the first cohort of moms giving birth. And it came as such a surprise, but it was a beautiful surprise that really made me feel that much more connected to the mothers and the families that we serve through BirthFUND.”

And now BirthFUND is growing. “I’m really, really proud that we’re actually about to deploy our second round of capital to 41 more families across the country.” says Welteroth, who counts stars like Chrissy Teigen and Kelly Rowland as funders, along with The Gates Foundation which recently awarded BirthFUND a $400,000 grant.

“I started with the mantra ‘It’s on us to save us,’ " she says. “And I’m just so, so proud of our team, and that we’re able to show up for women and families, especially in this moment now where we are seeing the system failing families. I’m really heartened and hopeful.”

She’s also really happy about how things are working out at home. After SantiGold was born, “My older son jumped right onto the bed where I gave birth and just immediately started patting his head and rubbing his back and wanting to help,” she says. “He’s going to be the best big brother.”

In all, “it’s a really beautiful little blissful bubble that we’re in right now that we’re just trying to savor.”
