With fans' attention drawn to her post confirming a sequel is not in development, she instead urged followers to keep their focus on the upcomingU.S. presidential election.

“What IS real is CHECK YOUR REGISTRATION AND VOTE!!!!” she added in her statement.

Attempts have been made to create a sequel or otherwise revitalizeThe Gooniesover the years. Donner, whodied in 2021at 91 years old, announced in 2014 that heintended on making a sequelwith the film’s original cast, but Spielberg, 77, said during a 2020 Zoom reunion with the filmmaker and cast that they never ideated a quality idea to take into production, perDeadline.

“Chris, Dick and I — and Lauren [Shuler Donner] — have had a lot of conversations about it,” he said at the time. “Every couple of years we come up with an idea but then it doesn’t hold water.”

At least one cast member has expressed interest in participating in a sequel in recent years. In January 2023, Quan, 53, said he would be interested in reviving the movie whileaccepting the award for best supporting actor in a motion pictureat the Golden Globe Awards.

“Sadly, we lost the captain of our ship [director Richard Donner], who I love dearly, and I really don’t know if there will beGoonies 2, butI would be open to reliving that characterif there is that opportunity,” Quan said at the time.
