Jax Taylor Has 'Mixed Emotions' amid Divorce from Brittany Cartwright but It's 'the Right Decision' (Exclusive Source)

Jax Taylorhas complicated feelings following the end of his marriage toBrittany Cartwright.

“Jax is feeling mixed emotions,” a source tells PEOPLE of the reality star’s feelings after the filing. “He knows this is ultimately the right decision but is sad that things ended up the way they have.”

The insider adds, “It’s been an emotional month for him and he’s trying to stay strong for his son.”

For Cartwright, the divorce “has been a long time coming,” according to the source. They also noted that the filing is “something Brittany knew she had to do for the best interest of herself and her son.”

“There’s a lot that has transpired over the past few months that she could not look past,” the source continues. “This decision wasn’t made lightly but she feels adamant that it was the right one.”

The source also shared that Cartwright and Taylor’s primary focus is on doing what’s best for Cruz.

“Their main priority is getting to a place of being amicable co-parents for their son and this next step will hopefully move them closer to that goal,” the source says.

A representative for the couple did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Cartwright first announced her separation from Taylor on the Thursday, Feb. 29 episode of their joint podcast,When Reality Hits.

“I know on my last podcast, I alluded to many marriages go through rocky times,” she said at the time. “Yes, marriages in general are very hard and I’ve had a particularly rough year this past year. Jax and I are taking time apart and I made the decision to move into another home to take some space for the sake of my mental health.”

The initial news of the couple’s split came just days before season 1 oftheir Bravo seriesThe Valleypremiered in March. Season 2 of the show is currently in production. Earlier this month, a source told PEOPLE that Cartwright and Taylor will continue to work together on the reality series.

The confirmation that Taylor would continue filming came after another source told PEOPLE that he had completed a30-day treatment at a mental health facility. “Brittany was supportive of Jax’s decision to seek help for their son’s sake,” the source said at the time. “However, going forward, she’s not interested in having anything to do with him.”

In addition to asking for primary custody of their son in her filing, Cartwright also asked the judge to terminate spousal support for both parties.
