Jon B has some strong feelings about artists who sample his old music.
During the July 31 episode of theCan We Talk R&B?podcast, the R&B singer, 49, recalled one of the more recent samplings of his 1997 hit song “They Don’t Know” featured onChlöe BaileyandGunna’s 2022 single “You & Me” — which uses lyrics from Jon’s famous hook on the intro and chorus and interpolates his guitar lick throughout — which he apparently wasn’t feeling.
“They put that ratchet record out that I couldn’t stand, and I wish they never did,” Jon shared bluntly. “[They] actually never got my rights to do that record, either, so, Gunna, we gotta holler about that… That’s some business s— we got to handle.”
Despite slamming Bailey and Gunna’s collaboration, the singer-songwriter said samples of his ’90s classic showing up on newer records “is a compliment to what we did.”
“That’s a [producers and co-songwriters] Tim & Bob compliment, that’s a me compliment. But at the same time, my lane is my lane, and my area is my area, and I earned that,” he continued. “If you made a hit in your area, you do your song whatever it is, I’m not going to just come into your area, take your joint and make it mine and then not pay you or whatever.”

“Because, historically, I never seen her do a song with different rappers. I wanted to do something different and bring it into both of our worlds — let them know how both of us are really creative artists because she is, too. Chloe is really passionate about her music like I am. It was dope to really get in, lock in and put a song out.”
Gunna last released his latest studio album,One of Wun, back in May. Meanwhile, Bailey, after much teasing, is gearing up to drop her sophomore album,Trouble in Paradise, on Friday, Aug. 9.
