PEOPLE caught up with Theroux, 53, at theRalph Lauren fashion showduring the kickoff ofNew York Fashion Weekon Thursday, Sept. 5. The actor — who dressed casually in jeans, a suede jacket and black shirt — shared his admiration forJenna OrtegaandCatherine O’Hara’s commitment to method dressing while they promoted the sequel to the 1988 classic.

Meanwhile, O’Hara, 70, paid homage to Beetlejuice himself in a black-and-while jumpsuit, before transitioning intoa gothic, structured black gownfor the red carpet.
“We did the red carpet right,” Theroux tells PEOPLE of the film’s cast. “That Jenna Ortega didreallywell. I mean if you really look at the succinctness of her looks… and Catherine O’Hara with the craziest, greatest fashion swings that anyone has ever taken. Fantastic.”

While he didn’t go quite as hard in terms of method dressing, the actor recently told PEOPLEhis style has always been “goth-adjacent.”
“I mean, there’s a really good case to be made that I haven’t changed what I’ve been wearing since I was 14,” he added. “I was sort of emo, punk, whatever you want to call it back in the day."

“I felt like I was an emo kid, and I think everyone related to or wanted to date Winona’s character,” he said, before adding that he felt fortunate to be part of the sequel.
He added, “I have such a soft spot in my heart forBeetlejuice, and it’s one of those miraculous moments in life where you’re like, ‘Someone just handed me the key to the front door of that movie, and I get to walk into that world.’ "
