Liam Payne 'Jumped from the Balcony of His Room' Before His Death at 31, Authorities Say

Liam Payne"jumped from the balcony" of his hotel room beforehis death at age 31, local authorities confirm to PEOPLE.

Payne was pronounced dead after falling multiple stories at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Policía Federal Argentina confirmed to PEOPLE.

Police had been called to the scene shortly after 5 p.m. local time and Payne was said to have died shortly afterward.

An investigation is currently underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the tragedy, local police told PEOPLE, adding that an autopsy will be conducted.

According to a translatedLa Naciontranscript, the worker said the musician was intoxicated and presumed he was “under the influence of alcohol and drugs,” insisting that someone needed to come “urgently” to the location. Throughout the call, Payne’s name was not thought to have been mentioned.

Per Sky News, the worker mentioned that the guest’s life might be “in danger” because he was “in a room with a balcony.”

“We’re afraid he could do something that threatens his life,” the manager — who said his name was “Esteban” — added, according to the outlet.

The BBC transcript also stated that the worker said Payne had been “trashing the entire room” before his death.
