“I’ll say this, and it doesn’t have nothing to do with the movie: Honestly, watching Keke as a mom, I remember meeting her when she was much younger. She’s such an amazing attentive mom and I love seeing it,” Howery exclusively tells PEOPLE at the Micheaux Film Festival in Culver City, Calif. on Oct. 27, where he was honored with the Oscar Micheaux Trailblazer of Excellence Award.

“I’ve had kids for a while now, so watching my friends become new parents and just seeing how excited they are to be parents is a beautiful thing.”

“Keke is amazing to work with. Another Chicago native [and] one of my friends,” Howery adds of working with theTrue Jackson, VPalum.

As for their new movie, Howery promises a lot of laughs. “I love the fact that we’re seeing a buddy comedy with two Black women and in this really silly space. We don’t get the chance to do that all the time,” he says.

Howery continues, “We had a movie likeGirls Trip, but not necessarily a one-two punch before, so to be able to be a part of this and we all trying to figure out ways to bring back theseFridaytype of comedies and letting Black people just be silly. I say sometimes our comedies get too serious and so this is going to be silly. So get ready just to laugh.”

“I try to bring him every-single-where I go,” theNopestar told PEOPLE. “It’s the funnest [sic] to me.”

“I’m just having fun watching him grow,” she added later on.

“It pushes you, in a way, to be an even more precise version of yourself,” she continued. “And I think that that’s the process.”
