Sen. Mallory McMorrow is documenting her journey into politics in her debut book.

McMorrow did not start out with her sights set on being a politician. In fact, she worked in product design and advertising for many years. But things changed when she woke up the day after the 2016 election and “Googled ‘how to run for office,'” she tells PEOPLE in an exclusive statement.

She has since become a staple in the United States political sphere and currently serves as the Senate Majority Whip and is in her second term in the Michigan Senate.

“I’ve learned the ins and outs of government, and have seen what works and what doesn’t in terms of how anyone can advocate effectively for change,” she explains.

“But I’ve also found myself at the forefront of the ugliest of our current moment: staring down armed gunmen looming above my head in the Senate chambers, grappling with a global pandemic and the rise of conspiracy theories and political violence, sexual harassment, misogyny and a personal smear so ugly and unfounded that the speech I gave in response went viral and turned me into a household name overnight,” she says.

Theis’ email contained no evidence of such practices in her state’s classrooms or of the accusations against McMorrow, who later said in a speech on the floor of the Michigan Senate that she didn’t expect to see her name associated with the baseless message.

“I sat on it a while, wondering why me,” McMorrow said. “And then I realized — because I am the biggest threat to your hollow, hateful scheme.”

Within two days, the video of McMorrow’s speech had been viewed on Twitter, now X, more than 10 million times.

Looking back on the controversy today, McMorrow says she “leveraged that moment to turn hate on its head, raise millions of dollars to support other candidates running for our state legislature.” Since then, she has “met thousands of people all across the country who want to get involved and make change, but who have no idea where to start.”

That’s where her new book comes in.

But maybe not quite yet. “This is a book for after the election, after the inauguration,” McMorrow insists. “When the dust settles on all of that, what happens next is on us.“Hate Won’t Win: Find Your Power and Leave This Place Better Than We Found Itwill be published on Mar. 25, 2025 and is now available for preorder, wherever books are sold.
