More Than 100 Dead After Hurricane Helene Ravages the South and 600 Remain Missing in 1 N.C. County: Officials

The death toll from the storm that made landfall as a Category 4 hurricane on Thursday, Sept. 26, reached at least 107 as of Monday, Sept. 30, according to theAssociated Press.

However, some news outlets are reporting more deaths have been confirmed.CNNreported a death toll of 115, whileCBS News’ tally sits at 116.

“This storm literally spared no one,” Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp said in a press briefing Monday, where he announced 25 storm-related deaths in the state.

Helene is one of the deadliest hurricanes to hit the mainland United States in the past 50 years, according to CNN.

“Devastation does not even begin to describe how we feel, but my teams will be continuing to help in recovery," Sheriff Quentin E. Miller said.

Another 153 people remain missing in northeast Tennessee, where at least two people have died after the storm triggered flash flooding throughout Appalachia, according to NBC News.

North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper predicted the death toll will continue to rise as rescue and recovery efforts continue, per the AP. More than 50 search teams have been deployed in the region.

County officials said crews will be going door-to-door to check on the individuals who were reported missing, according to ABC News.

As of the morning of Monday, Sept. 30, more than 1.5 million people remain without power, including more than 760,000 in South Carolina, 573,000 in Georgia and 458,000 in North Carolina, according toPowerOutage.us.
