A month after appearing at aDonald Trumprally to back the presidential hopeful, reggaeton superstarNicky Jamis rescinding his co-sign.
Nickyposted to InstagramWednesday, Oct. 30 and explained via video why he wasrenouncing his supportfor the Republican candidate. Speaking in Spanish to his 43.5 million followers, the “Calor” singer said, “The reason I supported Donald Trump is because I believed it was what’s best for the economy in the United States, where a lot of Latinos live.”
He explained that since Trump is a “businessman,” backing him “was the right move” in the interest of helping “immigrants that are suffering over the state of the economy.”
“Never in my life did I think that one month later there would be a comedian who would criticize my country and speak poorly of my country,” the 43-year-old said. “And for that I withdraw my support of Donald Trump. Puerto Rico should be respected.”
Nicky’s new stance comes after comedianTony Hinchcliffetook the podium at Trump’s New York City rally on Sunday, Oct. 27 and made disparaging remarks against the island. In his opening remarks, Hinchcliffe said, “There’s a lot going on. I don’t know if you know this, but there’s literally a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean right now. I think it’s called Puerto Rico.”
