This orangutan was just monkeying around!
Kembali “accessed an area just outside of the new outdoor habitat,” an Aug. 29Facebookpost from the zoo read.
The 16-year-old primatethen traveled from the bottom rope to the platform, around a wire near the top of the tower, and then grabbed a steel bracket below the platform to climb down from the tower.
In addition to thanking guests for sending videos and pictures to help figure out what happened, the Toronto Zoo said it is “grateful to zoo staff and volunteers for their quick actions once they were notified of the incident.”
The zoo added that it is consulting “international experts” to determine how to fix the habitats to prevent similar incidents in the future. The enclosure, which cost $11 million, opened in the summer of 2023 and will remain closed until further notice.

The zoo’s websitedescribes the acrobatic primate Kembali as “a free spirit who finds joy and adventure in every moment.”
“A bundle of energy, he loves swinging high and fast through the exhibit, or hanging upside down and dropping dramatically to the ground,” the zoo added.
As for Kembali’s fun fact? It should come as no surprise that “when moving spaces, Kembali gets so excited that he will somersault from one location to another.”

Furniss said that orangutans are “highly, highly intelligent” animals, and noted that Kembali is “probably at an even different level.”
He also gave insight into the rope apparatus that the nimble orangutan could be seen walking on. “Over the last couple of months, Kembali has really started getting into the swing of things [while exploring the habitat],” he said.
