That’s not to say McEntire has always had it easy when it came to dressing for major events. She told PEOPLE in April that it took time to grow comfortable in her own skin andstand up to the industry.
She recalled one time early in her career when a stylist put her in a strapless dress that kept falling down but she was too afraid to say anything but she finally told herself she needed to put herself and her comfort first.
“It took me a while to gain that confidence to stand up to a professional stylist, hair and makeup person and say, ‘That’s not me. I don’t like that,'” she said. “And they’d say, ‘Well, yeah, you just sit here and we’ll make sure you look just right.’ I said, ‘Well, make me look like me.’”
