PEOPLE has an exclusive video showing behind the scenes ofA Complete Unknown, which covers Dylan’s life in the 1960s as he began performing in New York City and eventually makes the then-controversial decision to incorporate electric guitars and rock ‘n’ roll music into the acoustic folk genre.

“It was important for me to play and sing on set because it was in the spirit of the movie to do it live,” Chalamet, 28, says in the video, which features glimpses of the Oscar nominee singing Dylan’s songs “The Times They Are a Changin'” and “Like a Rolling Stone.”

The film’s music supervisor Steven Gizicki says Chalamet performed live guitar, vocals and harmonica solos for performances seen in the movie.
