Soccer Star George Baldock Found Dead in His Swimming Pool at 31: 'Shocked by the Loss'

English soccer star George Baldock has died at the age of 31.

According to theBBC, the athlete — who was born in the U.K. but also held Greek nationality — was found dead in a swimming pool at his home in Glyfada, Athens, on Wednesday, Oct. 9.

The outlet reported that there was no evidence of foul play and that a local coroner had initially suggested Baldock died of drowning before his body was found at 10:30 pm local time.

According toReuters, the soccer player could not be revived after police tried cardiopulmonary resuscitation on him.

Baldock’s family also said in a statement per the outlets, “We can confirm that George has sadly passed away. As a family we are in shock at this terrible loss.”

The player joined the leading Greek soccer club Panathinaikos as a defender back in May after playing for Sheffield United in England for seven years.

He also played the same position 12 times for the Greek national team, following his debut in 2022.

Expressing their condolences, Panathinaikos paid tribute to their late player on social media.

Sheffield United also paid tribute to their former player.

“Sheffield United Football Club is shocked and extremely saddened to learn of the passing of former player, George Baldock,” theywrote on X. “The defender left the club in the summer after seven years at Bramall Lane and was extremely popular with supporters, staff and team-mates who pulled on a red and white shirt alongside him.”

They added, “The sincere condolences of everyone associated with Sheffield United are extended to George’s family and friends.”

Baldock’s final post onInstagramwas a clip of him getting ready to join Panathinaikos' team.

“New beginnings his caption read,” as the video captured him undergoing health checks before wearing a T-shirt with the team’s logo and signing his contract.
