The Santa Clausepremiered on Nov. 11, 1994, and quickly became a perennial holiday favorite. The movie follows a recently divorced father, Scott Calvin (Tim Allen), as he’s unexpectedly enlisted to become the new Santa Claus. From rapidly gaining the mythical character’s trademark jolly belly to growing a snow-white beard, Scott’s journey to embracing his new destiny is both comical and heartwarming.

While the film is centered on Santa, it is also beloved for its memorable cast and characters — from elves like Bernard (David Krumholtz) and Judy (Paige Tamada) to Scott’s son, Charlie (Eric Lloyd).

The series has been well-received, but according to actressCasey Wilson, working with Allen was no walk in the park. “It was truly [the]single worst experienceI’ve ever had with a costar ever," she said in December 2023 on her podcast,Bitch Sesh: A Real Housewives Breakdown, adding that the cast and crew “walk[ed] on eggshells” and “looked frantic” when the actor was around.

Eric Lloyd as Charlie Calvin

Eric Lloyd portrays Scott’s son, Charlie Calvin, in the popular Christmas movie. With his pure heart and eager spirit, Charlie plays an essential role in helping his dad embrace the unexpected responsibilities of Santa Claus.

In a2017 interview with ABC News, Lloyd shared a behind-the-scenes tidbit from the first movie: He had to wear fake teeth during filming. “I was getting to that age where my teeth were falling out,” Lloyd recalled. “So my bottom two teeth throughout the whole film are all fake teeth, because [they] fell out naturally at the beginning of the film.”

Throughout the ’90s and early-2000s, Lloyd continued to build his career with roles like young Bruce Wayne inBatman & Robin(1997) and a recurring part on ABC’sJessewithChristina Applegatefrom 1998 to 2000. He was also cast in family films likeDunston Checks In(1996) andMy Giant(1998).

According to his official website, Lloyd graduated from Chapman University with a degree in film production. He later delved into sound and post-production and honed these skills as the sound mixer for shows likeHoldingandSisters. These days, Lloyd runs his own production studio and channels his creative energy as the guitarist and vocalist for the band Radio Mason.

Before breaking into Hollywood, the Canadian actress gained recognition on various Canadian shows and films. Her first major box-office success came withThe Good Son(1993), starring alongsideMacaulay CulkinandElijah Wood. The following year, she landed her iconic role as Laura inThe Santa Clause, reprising the part in both sequels.

Off-screen, Crewson was married to actor Michael Murphy from 1988 to 2009. They have two children, Maggie and John.

In 2014, the actress came out as gay. Shetold Global Newsin 2015 that her son’s reaction to her personal news was powerful. “The first thing he said to me was: ‘You are so brave. That must have been so scary to tell me,’ ” Crewson recalled. “It makes me emotional even when I think about it.”

Judge Reinhold as Dr. Neil Miller

InThe Santa Clause,Judge Reinholdportrayed Dr. Neil Miller, Laura’s new psychiatrist husband, who’s concerned about Scott’s transformation into Santa, fearing it might negatively impact Charlie.

Before this role, Reinhold had already made a name for himself in showbiz. He starred as Det. Billy Rosewood in the massively successfulBeverly Hills Copfilm trilogy alongsideEddie Murphy(and returned for its fourth installment in 2024,Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F). He also had supporting roles in comedies likeStripes(1981) andFast Times at Ridgemont High(1982) withSean Penn.

In 1988, Reinhold hosted an episode ofSaturday Night Live, and in 1994, he guest-starred onSeinfeldas “The Close Talker,” earning anEmmynomination for outstanding guest actor in a comedy series. Additionally, the actor reprised the role of Neil Miller in bothThe Santa Clause 2andThe Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause.

In his personal life, Reinhold has been married twice. He wed his first wife, Carrie Frazier, during the ’80s and tied the knot with his current wife, movie director Amy Miller, in 2000. Together they have a daughter, Haley, who was born in 2013.

David Krumholtz as Bernard

David Krumholtzstole the show as head elf Bernard. Thanks to his wit and attitude, Bernard was funny and in charge, especially when Santa needed help the most. He also reprised his role inThe Santa Clause 2and a 2022 episode ofThe Santa Clauses.

Since then, he’s expanded his acting credits with parts in Aaron Sorkin’sThe Newsroom(2012) and on HBO’sThe Deucefrom 2017 to 2019. In 2020, he appeared on the HBO miniseriesThe Plot Against America, and in 2022, he took on attorney Jimmy Baxter in the miniseriesThe White House Plumbers.

Since 2010, Krumholtz has been married to actressVanessa Britting, with whomhe shares two kids: daughter Pemma Mae, born in 2014, and son Jonas, born in 2016.

In 2011, Krumholtz was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and declared cancer-free after radiation therapy; the actorcommemorated his 10-year milestoneon Instagram in 2021.

“Had Bethany not discovered the lump, I’d have no children. I’d be gone,” wrote the actor, who said he learned about the tumor while receiving a massage and thanked the masseuse who found it.

Paige Tamada played another fan favorite, Judy, the mild-mannered elf who serves up a mean cup of hot cocoa and reveals she’s more than 1,200 years old.

Born in 1985, Tamada was just 9 years old whenThe Santa Clausepremiered, but she already had a few titles on her résumé, having first worked with Allen on a 1993 episode ofHome Improvement.

She also had guest roles on popular shows likeSeinfeld,The Fresh Prince of Bel-AirandAlly McBeal. The latter series marked her final acting credit until 2023, when she reappeared in theSanta Clausefranchise as a coffee stand owner in a season 2 episode ofThe Santa Clauses.

Also introduced in the sequel, Liliana Mumy played Lucy Miller, Laura and Neil’s daughter and Charlie’s half-sister. The actress also reprised the role in the third film,The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause.

Spencer Breslin joined the movie series inThe Santa Clause 2as Curtis, an elf and second-in-command under Bernard. As one of the North Pole’s bookkeepers, Curtis is entrusted with Santa’s handbook, which reveals that Scott must find a Mrs. Claus. Breslin also reprised his role inThe Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause.

Although he hasn’t reprised the role since the franchise’s third film, Breslin has doting feelings about new generations of kids watching the Christmas movie.

He continued: “The fact they’ve stood the test of time that long and are kind of like Christmas classics. The babies who were seeing it in [theaters] are now showing their babies. It’s cool to think they’ve lasted and aged so well.”

Before joining the holiday comedy series, Breslin had his breakout role inThe Kid(2000) alongsideBruce Willis. His other notable credits include appearances inThe Cat in the Hat(2003) withMike MyersandThe Happening(2008) withMark Wahlberg.

Breslin’s sister,Abigail Breslin, is also a well-known actress, famous for films likeLittle Miss Sunshine(2006) andMy Sister’s Keeper(2009). He was briefly married to activist Grace Tame from 2017 to 2021.

Outside of acting, Breslin has pursued a music career, releasing his debut album,Labor Day, in 2012. He also formed the indie folk-punk band Broken Machine.

Martin Shortjoined the franchise inThe Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clauseas the wry and nefarious Jack Frost, though he was already a well-established comedian before then.

Short has since added more small-screen hits to his acting credits, includingThe Morning ShowwithJennifer AnistonandReese WitherspoonandSchmigadoon!, where he played Steven the Leprechaun from 2021 to 2023. More notably, Short has become a familiar face onOnly Murders in the Buildingas Oliver Putnam, acting alongside Steve Martin andSelena Gomezand earning four Emmy nominations for his performance.

Off-camera, Short was married to actressNancy Dolmanfrom 1980 until her death from cancer in 2010. The actortoldAARP The Magazinein 2019 that he feels she is still a part of his life.

“Our marriage was a triumph. So it’s tough. She died in 2010, but I still communicate with her all the time,” Short said. “I believe that when people die, they zoom into the people that love them. This idea that it just ends, anddon’t speak of them— that’s wrong. That’s based on denial that we’re all going to die. So to me, she’s still here.”

Before her death, they hadthree children: daughter Katherine Elizabeth Short, a social worker; son Oliver Patrick Short, a production assistant; and son Henry Hayter Short, a veterinary assistant.

On the way, fans can watch Short lend his voice to Otis Volcanowitz, a young detective, in season 2 of Fox’s animated comedyGrimsburg, voice acting alongsideJon Hamm,Decider reported. Additionally, Shorthas been touring with Martinfor their joint live show,The Dukes of Funnytown!, with performances scheduled into February 2025.
