Group A told their stories through song on Soundtrack of My Life Night.

Only one contestant could move forward to the quarterfinals but hostNick Cannonannounced the return of the Ding Dong Keep it On bell that judgesKen Jeong,Jenny McCarthy,Rita OraandRobin Thickecould ring to save one singer throughout the season.

Ship set sail first.

“There was a time I found myself shipwrecked, broke, living off a $2 burrito a day,” Ship said in her clue package that showed a rowboat and John Wayne.

Ship talked about singing background on an international tour. “As thrilling as it was, I knew I had my own stories to tell,” she said.

“It sounded to me like that was your best performance,” Thicke, 47, said.

McCarthy, 51, thought Ship would be “a tough one to beat.”

Each performer received a time capsule clue, and Ship got a note that read, “Congrats on the best new artist win. You are a true leading lady. Signed, LeAnn ’98."

Ship explained, “This note is from one of the most treasured moments of my career. And it meant the world to receive recognition from such a talented woman likeLeAnn Rimes.”

Paula Cole,Norah Jones,Alanis Morisette,Sarah McLachlanand Joan Osborne arose as options for Ship’s identity.

Woodpecker perched on stage next.

“I come from a line of strong chicks in my family tree and all of us live under one roof,” Woodpecker said in her clue package.

The bird shared that her great-grandmother “introduced me to jazz and Ray Charles,” her maternal grandmother “gave me the courage to go after my dreams” and her other grandmother loves watchingThe Masked Singer.Regina Hall, a hamburger and a globe also appeared in the clue package.

“I hope I am making you proud in this tight corset,” Woodpecker said to her grandma afterward.

The judges thought Woodpecker could beTatyana Ali,Quinta BrunsonorLiza Koshy.

Afterward, Buffalos stampeded to the stage.

“We’ve learned that sometimes the hardest parts of life are when were forced to be the most harmonious,” one Buffalo said.

Another Buffalo added, “We had one cowboy who helped guide us and inspired us the most.”

The third Buffalo called that cowboy “a real MacGyver,” but another said, “We lost him suddenly.”

Buffalos thought the cowboy’s death would be the end of their group. “We sang as we put him to rest thinking it would be our last time, but we knew he would’ve wanted us to keep the herd together,” one Buffalo said.

The clue package additionally featured an umbrella, a bell and a Dead End sign.

The trio put their spin on The Verve’s “Bittersweet Symphony,” which caused Ora, 33, to declare, “I fancy a bunch of buffaloes.”

For their clue, the Men in Black brought out a halftime T-shirt.

“This halftime t-shirt has aged over time like us, but we can tell you this performance was in front of one of the biggest audiences in the world,” one Buffalo said.

The panel suggested Buffalos might beB2K,Black Eyed Peas,Boyz II MenorBone Thugs-N-Harmony.

After the judges and studio audience voted for their favorite performance of the night, Cannon, 44, announced Woodpecker would be the first to unmask, leaving Buffalos and Ship to compete in the Battle Royale.

When Woodpecker removed her feathers and long beak,Black-ishactressMarsai Martinappeared.

Then Buffalos and Ship each gave their rendition of Fleetwood Mac’s “Go Your Own Way.”

The judges ultimately decided to send Buffalos through to the quarterfinals, leaving Ship to unmask. When she arose from the seas, Ship turned out to be singer-songwriter Paula Cole.
