Kate WinsletandLeonardo DiCapriomet in 1996 while filming the blockbusterTitanic, playing one of the most iconic couples in cinematic history: Rose Dewitt Bukater and Jack Dawson, star-crossed lovers who met on the ill-fated Titanic in 1912.

The two weren’t friends before filming, but they knew of each other – enough for Winslet to have her eye on Leo. Ina 1998 interview, she admitted: “My god, did I want to Leo to play that part.”

Luckily for her, that was a hurdle they never had to overcome: The two instantly clicked, Winslet said, and were friends from the beginning. Here, look back at their 28-year-long friendship.

Filming the movie was a huge, seven-month-long undertaking that involvedhours in a water tank(for Winslet, without a wetsuit, which led to a case of pneumonia). The young actors bonded throughout filming, though, so much so that Winslet’s friends got a little jealous. “The closeness and the strength of the friendship that we had is something a lot of my friends envy like mad,” she said. “But to me he’s just silly old Leo.”

Avideo shared on Xfrom event showed DiCaprio singing Winslet’s praises while introducing the movie. The two also shared a friendly kiss on the lips as she appeared onstage.

“Kate, my dear friend, your work in this film has been nothing short of transformative,” DiCaprio said in the video; he also introduced her to the crowd as “one of the great talents of my generation.”
