Oscar-winning actress Nyong’o, 41, told PEOPLE at the film’s screening at the Toronto International Film Festival that she couldn’t wait for herniecesto see the film.
Nyong’o said when she first read the script, she thought of her nieces finally being able to understand what she does for a living.
“I look forward to my nieces and nephews being able to watch this film and thinking of things like theCharlie Brown ChristmasandLion King, and these formative things for me and what they’ve done for my most impressionable years,” she explained. “This could be that for my nieces and nephews and they could have this direct relationship with it, not only because it’s a great story with a great message, but their auntie is in it.”

“Those voices on TikTok and Instagram that are so positive and nothing’s ever wrong. That sort of can-do attitude. That was the starting point for Roz and her journey to self-actualization and evolution of self-expression,” she said.
Her commitment to this “super-positive voice” ended up having consequences. Nyong’o gave herself avocal cord polypand had to go on vocal rest for three months, she noted during an appearance on the June 20 episode ofLate Night with Seth Meyers.
She said the film features Roz going on a “journey to finding, I guess, what we would call humanity, like empathy.”
