Vance Dodges Answers About Trump’s Refusal to Accept 2020 Election Results
October 01, 2024 10:48 PM EDT
When Walz turned to Vance and asked, “Did Donald Trump win the 2020 election?” Vance demurred, saying, “I’m focused on the future.”
“That’s a damning non-answer,” Walz responded, adding, “He lost the election. This is not a debate.”
In the same conversation, Walz said: “When Mike Pence made that decision to certify that election, that’s why Mike Pence isn’t on this stage. What I’m concerned about is, where is the firewall with Donald Trump?”
“That’s what we’re asking you, America: Will you stand up?” he continued. “America, I think you’ve got a really clear choice on this election: Who’s going to honor democracy, and who’s going to honor Donald Trump?”

Swift recently took to Instagram to express her support for Harris and Walz, signing her post “Childless Cat Lady,” a phrase referencing Vance’s critique of prominent Democrats as “childless cat ladies.”
Walz discovered Swift’s endorsement while on air with MSNBC. Upon hearing the news, he placed a hand on his heart, smiled, and mouthed “wow.” He commented, “I am incredibly grateful to Taylor Swift, and I say that as a cat owner.” Shortly after, the official website for the Harris-Walz campaignbegan selling Taylor Swift-inspired friendship braceletsfor $20, featuring the message “Harris Walz 24.”

Gus Walz Witnessed Shooting During Volleyball Practice, His Father Says

Asked about enacting stricter gun laws, Vance said he instead supported enacting stronger school security measures and arguing that stricter gun laws were something of an attempt to “magically wave a wand and take the guns out of the hands of bad guys.”
Walz, saying that both he and Harris are gun-owners and that he is a hunter, argued that “no one’s trying to scaremonger” but that he believes in tougher gun laws, adding, “Do you want your schools hardened to look like a fort?”
Elsewhere in the conversation, Walz said thathis 17-year-old son, Gus, had once witnessed a shooting during volleyball practice — a remark that led Vance to say he was sorry Walz’s son had experienced that.

Do Vice Presidential Debates Matter?
October 01, 2024 08:39 PM EDT
Vice presidential debates aren’t known for being deciding factors in White House races, and tonight’s broadcast will be only a drop in the large bucket of things impacting Americans’ votes. Still, there’s reason to believe that the stakes of the VP debate are higher than normal this year.
Perhaps more than ever before, vice presidential nominees are being seriously vetted as potential future presidents. The importance of a strong vice president became apparent when Harris unexpectedly replaced Joe Biden on the presidential ticket in July, and after the oldest presidential nominee in history — Trump — survived two assassination attempts on the campaign trail. Voters have it fresh on their minds that vice presidents are only a heartbeat from the Oval Office, and in a race where both running mates are still introducing themselves to the world, a primetime stage can make all the difference.
