A bride’s choice to have avegan wedding— including the cake — did not go over well with one of her guests.

In a post onReddit’s popular “Am I the A——?” forum, the 30-year-old bride said she and her husband, 32, are both vegans and “made it clear in advance” that the food at their wedding would be plant-based. “No one complained—until the reception,” she wrote.

The bride and groom were thrilled with their “gorgeous” three-tier cake decorated with edible flowers, so they were surprised when a guest named Linda approached them “looking visibly upset” to complain about the confection.

“She said it was ‘disrespectful’ to have a vegan cake on display because it felt like I was ‘pushing my lifestyle’ on everyone,” the bride wrote, explaining that she told Linda that the cake was not meant to be “a statement,” but simply the dessert the couple chose for their wedding.

“But she insisted I either move the cake off the main table or add a sign saying it was vegan so people weren’t ‘tricked’ into eating it,” the bride continued.

She said she put her foot down and refused to move or label the cake because “it was my wedding” and the dessert was “not propaganda.” Plus, “no one else seemed to care” that the cake was vegan.

“Linda ended up storming out, and now my in-laws are saying I should’ve compromised to avoid drama,” the bride wrote.

Since she has had time to reflect on the situation and discuss it with her husband, the bride is feeling conflicted. “I think Linda’s reaction was ridiculous, but my husband thinks I could’ve just put up a sign to keep the peace,” she concluded, inviting the Reddit community to weigh in.

Another pointed out that “there’s hardly a difference” between a regular cake and a vegan one anyway. “What’s even the difference? Substitutions for eggs and dairy? It’s not like you snuck Linda a grilled leaf patty dressed up as a sirloin steak or whatever she thinks vegan food is like — it’s just a few changed ingredients,” they wrote.

“I do not understand people with the mentality that eating one vegan meal, especially one that someone else is paying for, will kill them,” a third person commented.

As for Linda’s claim that the bride and groom “tricked” their guests with the vegan cake, a Redditor noted that they took the step of forewarning everyone about the wedding food — so no one should have been surprised.

“They had the choice to come or not. They had the choice to consume or not. Nothing was hidden,” they wrote, adding of Linda, “She caused drama for the sake of drama.”
