Winona Ryderand her siblings, Sunyata, Jubal and Uri, all have a passion for the arts.

Eventually, the family relocated to San Francisco, where theymade regular seven-hour road tripsto Los Angeles for Winona’s auditions.

Winona and her siblings grew up in northern California

When she was 7, Winona and her family left San Francisco to live on a commune with seven other families. In a 2024Esquirecover story, Winona said the 380-acre plot was called Rainbow and had no electricity. She and her family lived there for three years.

Speaking withParadein 2019, Winona described her parents as “beatnik” — “even though beatnik is sort of the precursor to the hippies,” she quickly added. While unconventional, Winona looks back on her childhood with fond memories. “The place we lived was, like, 380 acres of redwoods. It was beautiful,” she continued.

Uri lived with Winona when he was working as an actor

During his early 20s, Uri resided at his big sister’s Hollywood estate, which she purchased for $2.5 million in 1998, according toVogue. The pair lived with a third roommate, a longtime friend of Winona’s.

Of living with her younger brother, Winona said at the time: “It’s my first real house … I have a pool. I have gardeners. It’s anadulthouse. I definitely couldn’t live here alone.”

Sunyata worked as a makeup artist

In the ‘90s, Sunyata worked as a makeup artist on film sets.

Her credits includeTransylvania Twist,Meet the ApplegatesandWelcome Home, Roxy Carmichael, which Winona starred in.

Winona and Jubal started an independent record label together

TheLittle Womenstar launched her own music label alongside her older brother, Jubal, and his best friend. The trio built Roustabout Records as a safe haven for “wayward musicians.”

“It’s totally independent and totally artist-friendly,” Winona toldSF Gatein 2000. “It’s just us and our money, with no outside investors. The artist gets 75 percent. Nobody can come in and tell anybody what to do.”

Jubal also worked as an assistant in Hollywood on Winona’s filmsLost Souls,Mr. DeedsandA Scanner Darkly. He even acted alongside his sister inReality Bitesin 1994. Beyond these creative industries, Jubal ran multiple comic bookstores at one point, and Winona said she enjoyed visiting them to work behind the register when she wasn’t filming, perWinona Ryder: The Biography.

Winona and Uri are very close

Uri looked up to Winona in more ways than one. In addition to being her little brother and roommate, Uri often tagged along as Winona’s plus one to red carpet events, including the 1994 Golden Globes at which she won the supporting actress award for her role in theAge of Innocence.

Uri also appeared as an extra in Winona’s 2000 horror film,Lost Souls. His other acting credits includeAirheads(1994),Pups(1999) andThe Blessed Ones(2017).
