Chloe Millerwas taken for quite a ride when her Australian Shepherd got a hold of her engagement ring.

After meeting as collegiate swimmers at Georgia Tech, the student was excited to be engaged to her fiancé after five years of dating. With Miller in grad school and her partner living in Florida for work, the couple was navigating along-distance relationshipwhen an incident happened involving their dog, Charlie.

One day in March 2022, Miller was slugging through a busy schedule as a graduate student. “I had been gone for eight hours prepping for a big exam I had the following day,” she tells PEOPLE. “I had left the ring in my ring dish on my bedside table.”

Miller didn’t think twice about not wearing her ring, until later when she realized it was missing.

“I am known to lose everything and at the time, Idid not have the diamond insured! I was absolutely devastated because I felt so irresponsible. I called my mother to tell my fiancé because I was so upset, at the time, and didn’t want to stress him out since he was in Florida,” she explains.

Miller eventually realized that Charlie had gotten a hold of the ring and that while chewing on it, the diamond came loose. At that point, she and her partner believed there was a good chance the dog swallowed it.

“She must have smelled it. I assumed she was chewing on it for some time. This is, unfortunately, not the only time she has got into jewelry. She does not chew up ANYTHING else except jewelry,” the dog owner shares.

Along with being worried about her diamond, the couple was also worried about Charlie.

“We did a lot of research to determine when we should start getting concerned. She is an incredibly smart dog and I think she knew we were searching for it because she was pooping up to 6-8 times the following two days,” Miller says.

“We had agreed to go to the vet the following Monday if it hadn’t passed. As well, we couldn’t be 100% sure that the diamond wasn’t in some carpet or blankets, so we were turning the house upside down.”

She continues, “Obviously, I was concerned for her health, but I will say I was an absolute wreck and pretty upset with her at the time. To this day, if I show her my ring, she will cower because she remembers how upset and distraught I was.”

As the situation was unfolding, Miller documented it on TikTok. “There was a sound trending that I felt fit perfectly, but Ineverexpected it to blow up.”

The concerned dog mom was happy to see a lot of people finding humor in the situation, which helped her get through the waiting game.

After a few days, Miller’s now-husband — who drove to be with her during the stressful time — was able to recover the diamond.

“Of course, he drove up immediately unexpectedly to help me find the diamond. He was actually the one to find the diamond in her poop nearly two days later,” she says.

“She swallowed the diamond on a Thursday, and the diamond passed on Saturday morning. The only damage was on the prongs of the ring. Since then I have gotten the ring fixed and diamond reset in a stronger setting.”

“I look back on that video and remember how upset I was in the moment, but to this day, we still joke about it with friends and family and even brought it up at the wedding,” she notes. “It is truly part of our love and family story.”
